VMworld 2008: VMware ESX 4.0 Coming Soon?
- Posted by:
Jeff James
Alessandro Perilli over at Virtualization.info authored an interesting blog post before the start of VMworld 2008, including some speculation on his part that the next-generation of VMware's ESX hypervisor -- ESX 4.0 -- may possibly be announced at the show. VMware did reveal some information about new ESX features during VMware CTO Dr. Steve Herrod's keynote on Wednesday morning, including some of the features that Perilli speculated would be in the next revision of ESX. Here's a partial excerpt from ...

Tech Ed 2008--Microsoft IT Eats Its Own Dogfood
- Posted by:
Sheila Molnar
Had a great conversation at Tech Ed with Barry Briggs, the Director of IT at Microsoft, about a classic Microsoft topic—eating your own dogfood. Basically, Briggs’s internal IT group runs prerelease versions of Microsoft products and files bug reports and provides other feedback. Microsoft has a history of putting prerelease software into production use at the company to work through tough problems at the enterprise level. Briggs says that the politically correct way to describe this internal testing is “the first and best” program. But everyone just calls it “eating your own dogfood” or...

Hacking Palin...
- Posted by:
Tony Howlett
I may be jumping off the deep end here by talking about politics but it's IT security related this week and hey if it brings comments, all the better, even if they are flames.I suppose most people have heard now that Governor Palin, the vice presidential candidate who has attracted tons of press lately had her Yahoo email account hacked. I just want to say how monumentally STUPID all parties involved in this story are. Number one, Ms. Palin. I would say she should know better, but knowing how techno-clueless almost all politicians are, I dont blame her totally. But her tech staff need to be fired on this one. It's...

Troubleshooting a Slow-Running Windows Server 2008
- Posted by:
Alan Sugano
We are in the middle of a major upgrade project for a new client. The client has two VMware ESX host servers running a variety of virtual server guests, including two domain controllers (DCs), File Server, Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Terminal Server. All servers are running Windows Server 2008 as the base OS with a mix of x86 and x64. All the servers were prepped for an initial Exchange cut over last Friday. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, we completed training on Exchange and SharePoint for the client and the servers ran flawlessly. ...

Reader Comment: The PM console was broken by IE7, shortly after Microsoft purchased PM. Microsoft never released a fix. They finally documented a registry hack to disable the IE7 functionality:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938611. . This was really aggravating at the time, but turned out to be a...

VMware Upgrades Workstation to 6.5
- Posted by:
Zac Wiggy
VMware has released version 6.5 of VMware Workstation, a desktop virtualization application aimed at technical professionals. Workstation allows multiple operating systems, including most desktop and server editions of Windows and Linux, to run simultaneously on one PC.Virtual desktops have many uses, but Workstation has many features targeted specifically at software developers. By allowing developers to create virtual machines (VMs) quickly with a variety of configurable specifications, the software lets them test their products in many different operating environments without leaving their PCs or even rebooting.The...

You've Sat; You've Stayed. Now Seek!
- Posted by:
Christan Humphries
For her birthday, I gave my sister a card embossed with golden print that reads "The economy stinks. Be happy you got this card." Endearing sentiments aside, my gift choice tells you two things: first, America's economy is so bad that even greeting cards are getting grumpy; second, my so-called sense of humor might cost me the affection of a family member. However disappointing the birthday gift (and my attempt at a joke) most likely was, the shiny message on it is accurate. And in this economy, which has forced companies to nudge—and sometimes shove—employees out of comfort zones and even jobs, I've noticed a change in attitude...

British RAF Site Burglarized, Data Stolen
- Posted by:
Mark Joseph Edwards
The Royal Air Force apparently can't keep data safe - not even records of tens of thousands of current and former RAF personnel. Thieves manage to steal a few USB drives containing the unencrypted data from inside the facilities at the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency at RAF Innsworth located in Gloucester. According to reports, the data wasn't encrypted because it was supposedly locked away in a "high security area." Well apparently their idea of "high security" isn't so great, and the statement is effectively a total denial of reality....

Systematic Paranoia
- Posted by:
Orin Thomas
As a security administrator you do have to assume that “they are all out to get you”. Not you specifically, but the resources it is your responsibility to manage. They aren’t doing this because you are guarding the crown jewels of Denmark. Attackers are trying every doorknob on the street hoping to find one unlocked, not just trying the ones where they suspect there is a brand new LCD TV. As a good security administrator you need to be systematic with your paranoia. Not only do you have to catalog the threats you face, you need to analyze and prioritize those threats. You need to do this in terms of the likelihood that the threat...

Self Paced or Instructor Led Training
- Posted by:
Orin Thomas
There are two basic ways of studying for certification. You do it all yourself or you go to a class. Before I go any further I’ll point out that I write Self Paced Training Kits for Microsoft, so there is a bit of an incentive for me to push one method over the other. On the other hand, I’ve also run instructor led courses. Anyway, now that that is out there, on with the post… Each type of study suits a particular person. If you simply can never find the time to study out of hours, or you need someone to give you a bit of a push when it comes to motivation, going to a class can be your best option. Some people simply need the routine...

Do You Drive a Hybrid?
- Posted by:
Curt Spanburgh
Hybrid is a term that you find in many contexts. Hybrid vehicles are hot items in the auto world. And there are hybrid bicycles and food from hybrid crops. But whatever the context, hybrids are models that fit a special situation. What about IT—where does “hybrid” fit into our world? Microsoft’s Software plus Services is one hybrid, and its cousins cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS) could also be components in hybrid IT solutions that combine offsite services and onsite hardware and software in a way that makes the most practical sense for a company.Hybrid IT solutions are looking better...

Microsoft Contemplating a Purchase of RIM?
- Posted by:

Rumors surfaced this past Friday that Microsoft is contemplating a purchase of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM). I first saw this juicy tidbit mentioned in Paul Thurrott's WinInfo Short Takes: Week of Septembmer 3 (InstantDoc ID: 96953). Soon after I read Paul's piece, I noticed that Computerworld had entered the fray with an article detailing the rumor, including comments from industry analysts. This particular rumor...
